I was aiming to write another post about hair loss for quite a while.
Which caused her to lose all her hair, as a child Sara battled nephroblastoma.
It’s the inside that matters, This experience stuck with her and she wanted young girlsgoing through hair loss to realize that it was not what’s on the outside that makes you beautiful. Losing your hair forces you to confront problems of self esteem and work on yourself from the inside out. I was inspired by this article about Clare Bowen from the show Nashville who recently cut off her long beautiful hair. So, one quote from this article that really hit home for me wasSelfesteem takes a lot longer to grow back than hair.
My wigs were all synthetic since they are easier to care for.
Less washing, and all that like real hair.
I have also heard that human hair wigs are hotter on your head, that is a major downside to wigs actually. Basically, I didn’t style them much, By the way I just chose short styles that I could brush, shape and go, to be honest though. And therefore the synthetic styles keep the shape and style better than the human hair wigs. All the best with chemo!!!! Now look. One downside is that I could not use heat styling ols on them. Essentially, I’d look for a wig shop in your area and go try both. Undoubtedly it’s our armor and protection from the world.
Being forced to change your appearance can make you feel like a victim.
For awesome scarf tying tutorials check YouTube, specifically this channel by Zukreat.
For those of you who need to go the head scarf route, I actually would suggest you first check with your cancer hospital resource center. They have not been my go to resource, I still occasionally wear head scarves for comfort and warmth. Make sure you drop a comment about it. I received ns of beautiful scarves from mine. Notice, while beautiful make me feel like I’m screaming I HAVE CANCER, hats, and head scarves. They have a slew of beautiful gently used scarves. Also, I decided to own this experience and take it as an opportunity to add a brand new look to my repertoire. Another place to look is thrift stores.
Losing your hair can make you feel naked and exposed. Hair is an ol for quickly changing our appearance to stay current with the recent fashion trends and it helps us fit in. We as women struggle with hair loss, as hair is tied to our identity, as I mentioned in my last post about hair.
I don’t need strangers to know I have cancer and I don’t need to draw attention to myself in that way.
I need to shed light on the various other resources available for those of you that haven’t worked up the courage to go bald yet or just don’t like that look on yourself, as much as I’m working on my selfconfidence and rocking the bald head at times.
Because carry on check the tags to ensure they are washable. 9 times out of 10, I want to pass. Own it and your confidence will radiate. Let me tell you something. Maybe you love that short sassy light red look or the long blonde curls. It is your chance to have a brand new persona and let a brand new side of you shine through.
Make an appointment at a wig salon and go in with an open mind, when you’ve done your research.
Wig shopping is a process and I don’t need you to go in blind. Before you go shopping, do your research.
I have organized the most important information into six categories and I hope you find it helpful. Trying on multiple wigs gonna be fun and it will give you a chance to see yourself in a brand new light. So here’s a question. Lace Front Wig or Basic CapWig?
As long as you can tuck plenty of the hair back without it showing the wig edges, I have found full cap wigs with volume and bangs to be top.
I have tried both and I have to say for me, I believe the basic capwigs work better.
Actually a lace front wig with bangs will resolve this issue and make the hairline seem more natural. Actually the lace front wigs have a lace edge that is trimmed along your hairline and the base where the hairs attach to the lace is meant to blend with your scalp and natural hair. Full capwigs likewise have a thick edge along the hairline and are not meant to blend as naturally. Therefore, I know it’s nearly impossible to tell the major differences in the pictures, I have included pictures of both on me below. Now regarding the aforementioned fact… You can not pull your hair back on these wigs as long as the edge will show. Ultimately, I believe it depends on the style of the wig. Normally, the real poser I have found with these wigs is that loads of us are aware that there is no hair to blend with the lace so the spot where the hairs attach to the lace seems to stand out more on my skin. A well-known fact that is. It’s a problem to find the time or the energy to write and all I seem to look for to do is sleep.I guess that’s just cancer sometimes you just don’t have energy for anythingelse but survival and I am learning to accept that.
I am doing best in order to keep some semblance of my normal life and I am still working busy aside from chemo and recovery days.
This chemo thing is no joke, I’m pretty sure I apologize for the delay in posting.
I am constantly exhausted and it seems that life never slows down. Actually the last thing you seek for is a wig so thin, your bald head shows through the wefts. Just think for a moment. Wigs that appear more flat tend to be thinner and are harder to style and amp up. Overall I love the volumized wigs as long as you have more hair to work with, sometimes this volume is I reckon. Plenty of info can be found easily online. Flat or Volume. Some synthetic wigs are created with ‘premade’ volume. They have plenty of poof to them, that gives the look of volume. For example, thank you very much for sharing the headscarf tutorials!
Another option is to get hats with hair, or wigs, attached to them.
This site sells some really great ones.
They don’t work all year round but winter and fall they’re great. Highlights all the way. Highlights or Monotone? I can’t stress this enough! Choosing a wig with highlights make it appear more real and add dimension to your look. They are usually blown away to learn that they are not my natural hair. Consequently, I have had so many people compliment me when I am wearing my wigs. Look for a wig with highlights if you need the wig to look natural. Now on to wigs, that I have found to be so fun! Long wigs can be hot and get very tangled.
My biggest suggestion when picking a wig is NOT to pick one that looks like your hair was before chemotherapy.
Don’t rule out any styles until you give them a try.
Thing is, they won’t make you look exactly like you did before chemo as long as you’ve changed and you’ll see yourself differently, the wigs these days are amazing and they look like real hair. Nonetheless, go on and leave the hair loose around the ears to hide the edge of the wig. I found it was easier to embrace the new me in a new look rather than try to wear a cut color that mimicked the old me. Another plus to the shorter styles is they get less tangled and are cooler to wear. I used this trick when I was in a friend’s wedding and wanted to match the other girls’ updos. Known I had long dark brown hair prior to chemo and every time I put on that long dark brown wig, I find myself saddened and frustrated striving to make the wig look like my old hair.
